Mentha viridis extract, commonly known as spearmint extract, is derived from the leaves of the spearmint plant. Unlike spearmint essential oil (which is concentrated through distillation), the extract is typically obtained through solvent extraction, making it gentler and more suitable for direct skin application in skincare formulations.
In cosmetic products, mentha viridis extract serves primarily as a masking agent and sensory ingredient, providing a cooling sensation and minty aroma. Beyond its sensory role, the extract contains naturally occurring compounds with potential antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.
How It Works
The extract contains volatile compounds and phenolic constituents that interact with bacteria and fungi at a cellular level, disrupting their growth and metabolism. These same compounds also act as antioxidants by donating electrons to unstable free radicals, stabilising them and preventing cellular damage.
The cooling sensation comes from mentholated compounds present in the plant, which activate TRPM8 receptors on the skin, creating a gentle cooling effect without lowering actual skin temperature.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests spearmint extract has antimicrobial efficacy against various pathogens, including fungi commonly implicated in skin conditions. A clinical trial examining a topical combination of spearmint essential oil with another botanical extract showed effectiveness comparable to a standard acne treatment in mild to moderate cases.
However, most evidence focuses on spearmint essential oil or whole plant preparations rather than the standardised extract form. As with many plant extracts, the concentration, extraction method, and formulation significantly influence actual skin benefits, so results can vary between products.

How to Use
Mentha viridis extract is typically found in rinse-off products such as cleansers and masks, or in leave-on serums and toners at low concentrations. If using a product containing this ingredient for its potential antimicrobial benefits, consistency matters more than frequency; incorporate it into a routine that suits your skin type. The cooling sensation is most noticeable immediately after application and will fade within a few minutes.
