What Is Methyl 2-Octynoate?
Methyl 2-octynoate is a synthetic fragrance ingredient derived from chemical synthesis rather than natural sources. It belongs to a class of compounds used in perfumery and cosmetic fragrance blends to contribute specific aromatic notes to a product.
In skincare, its sole function is olfactory—it contributes to the overall scent profile of a formula. It does not exert active skincare benefits and is used at very low concentrations, typically well below 1% in most products.
How It Works
Methyl 2-octynoate works as a volatile aromatic compound that diffuses from the product when applied to the skin, delivering scent. It does not penetrate the skin or interact with skin cells in a measurable way.
Because it is present in minimal quantities and remains largely on the skin surface, any systemic absorption is negligible under normal use conditions.
Clinical Evidence & References
Safety assessments by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) have evaluated methyl 2-octynoate for genotoxicity, skin sensitisation, phototoxicity, and repeated-dose toxicity. The ingredient showed no genotoxic potential and was found to be safe at levels of exposure well below those encountered in cosmetic use.
It was identified as a fragrance allergen in quantitative risk assessments of perfumed products, meaning it may trigger contact allergic reactions in sensitised individuals. However, the prevalence of specific sensitisation to this ingredient is not well documented in the wider population.

How to Use
If you use fragrance-containing skincare products, patch test first if you have a history of fragrance sensitivity. Those with contact allergies to fragrance ingredients or preference for unscented formulations may choose to avoid products listing methyl 2-octynoate. It will not alter the efficacy of other active ingredients in a formula.
