What Is Methyl Pyrrolidone?
Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a synthetic organic solvent — a liquid compound used to dissolve and carry other ingredients in skincare formulations. It has a mild odour and functions primarily as a delivery system rather than an active treatment ingredient in its own right.
In skincare products, NMP works behind the scenes to improve how other actives are absorbed and distributed through the skin layers. It is particularly useful in formulations where enhanced penetration of key ingredients is desired.
How It Works
NMP alters the structure and behaviour of the outermost skin layer (the stratum corneum), creating temporary pathways that allow other molecules to pass through more readily. This process is sometimes called 'chemical penetration enhancement'.
By increasing skin concentration of the active ingredients it's paired with, NMP can amplify their delivery and absorption. The effect is dose-dependent, meaning higher concentrations of NMP generally produce greater penetration enhancement.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research demonstrates that NMP significantly increases skin permeation of various actives, including anti-inflammatory compounds and hormonal ingredients, in both animal models and cadaver skin studies. The enhancement effect is measurable and correlates with NMP concentration in the formulation.
Most evidence comes from controlled laboratory settings rather than human clinical trials on finished products. Real-world efficacy in cosmetic formulations depends on the specific actives present, concentrations used, and overall formula composition.

How to Use
NMP is typically formulated into skincare by manufacturers rather than added by consumers. If using a product containing NMP, follow standard application instructions provided by the brand. The ingredient works best as part of a complete formulation rather than used in isolation.
