What Is Morinda Citrifolia Fruit Extract?

Morinda citrifolia fruit extract comes from the noni fruit, a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. The extract is prepared by processing the fruit to isolate its active phytochemicals, which include iridoids, flavonoids, anthraquinones and phenolic compounds. In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent.

The ingredient has a long history of traditional use in East Asian medicine for inflammatory conditions, though its application in modern skincare remains relatively niche, appearing in fewer than 1% of commercial products.

How It Works

The extract contains compounds such as flavonoids and iridoids that are thought to interact with skin's immune response and inflammatory signalling pathways. These phytochemicals may help regulate excessive inflammatory reactions whilst supporting the skin's natural barrier function.

When applied topically in skincare products, the extract is believed to work as a humectant and conditioning agent, helping to retain moisture and maintain skin's structural integrity.

Clinical Evidence & References

Animal studies using fermented noni extract have shown promise in models of atopic dermatitis, with observed improvements in dermatitis scores, skin thickness and inflammatory markers. However, human clinical evidence specific to topical skincare use remains limited.

It is important to note that whilst noni has been used traditionally and orally for inflammation, high-dose consumption has been associated with liver toxicity concerns in both animal studies and isolated human cases. The safety profile of topical application at cosmetic concentrations appears more favourable, though long-term human safety data is sparse.

How to Use

Morinda citrifolia fruit extract is typically incorporated into serums, creams and treatment products. As concentrations vary widely (1% to 82%), follow the specific product instructions. It can generally be used daily as part of a routine, though those with sensitive or reactive skin may wish to introduce it gradually to assess tolerance.

Safety & Precautions

Topical application of Morinda citrifolia fruit extract in cosmetic formulations is considered relatively well-tolerated. However, given historical concerns associated with high-dose oral consumption, use as directed and avoid ingestion.
