What Is Myristica Fragrans Extract?

Myristica fragrans extract is derived from nutmeg seeds, a botanical with a long history in traditional medicine across Europe, Asia, and Africa. The extract contains a complex mix of bioactive compounds including terpenes, lignans, and phenylpropanoids, which contribute to its activity in skincare formulations.

In cosmetic products, this ingredient typically serves as a tonic and masking agent. It appears in a small proportion of skincare products (around 0.1%), often selected for formulations targeting skin health and microbial balance.

How It Works

The extract appears to work through multiple mechanisms. Its bioactive compounds, particularly a neolignan component identified in research, demonstrate antimicrobial activity against bacteria implicated in acne. The extract may also suppress inflammatory pathways—specifically inhibiting nitric oxide and prostaglandin production—which can help reduce inflammation associated with bacterial skin conditions.

Additionally, the extract seems to support the skin's natural defence system by promoting growth of commensal bacteria like Staphylococcus epidermidis, which naturally colonise healthy skin and help prevent pathogenic infection through metabolite production.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro research indicates that Myristica fragrans extract shows antimicrobial activity against acne-associated bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus) at relatively low concentrations. One study found a specific neolignan compound within the extract exhibited minimum inhibitory concentrations in the low microgramme range, and also demonstrated inhibition of inflammatory markers (NO, PGE2, iNOS, and COX-2).

Preliminary evidence also suggests the extract may support skin health by enhancing beneficial commensal bacteria. However, the evidence base remains limited to in vitro studies; human clinical trials are needed to establish real-world efficacy and optimal concentrations for skincare use. Traditional use supports its value as a skin tonic, though this alone does not constitute modern clinical evidence.

How to Use

Myristica fragrans extract is typically used as one component within a broader formulation rather than as a standalone treatment. It is generally well-suited to products targeting acne-prone or compromised skin microbiomes. As with any new skincare ingredient, introduce it gradually if you have sensitive skin, and use consistently to assess any benefits over several weeks.

Safety & Precautions

Myristica fragrans extract is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. Note that the raw essential oil contains compounds (safrole and myristicin) that have toxicity concerns; however, processed extracts used in skincare are designed to minimise these. Avoid ingestion and keep away from eyes.
