Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a colourless, odourless inert gas that makes up approximately 78% of the air we breathe. In skincare formulations, it serves as a propellant—a substance that creates pressure within an aerosol container to dispense the product when you press the actuator.As a propellant, nitrogen pushes the active ingredients out of the bottle in a fine, controlled mist or spray. It does not chemically interact with skincare actives, which makes it a stable choice for preserving formula integrity during storage and use.

Nitrogen functions by creating positive pressure within a sealed aerosol container. When you activate the spray mechanism, this pressure forces the liquid formulation up through a dip tube and out through the nozzle, delivering a fine mist or controlled spray.Because nitrogen is chemically inert, it does not participate in reactions with the skincare ingredients themselves. It remains separate from the product, serving purely a mechanical function to enable dispensing.

Shake the container gently before use to ensure even distribution of ingredients. Spray from a distance of approximately 15–20 cm from the skin for optimal coverage. Store aerosol products upright in a cool place away from direct sunlight to maintain consistent pressure and product performance throughout the product's shelf life.

Nitrogen propellant is generally recognised as safe in cosmetic products and is approved for use in the EU and UK. Standard precautions apply: avoid spraying near eyes, do not expose to extreme heat, and follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.
