Octyldodecyl oleate is a synthetic ester derived from oleic acid, a fatty acid found naturally in oils. It is created by combining octyldodecanol (a branched alcohol) with oleic acid through an esterification process.In skincare, it functions as an emollient—a ingredient designed to smooth and soften the skin by filling gaps between skin cells and reducing water loss. It is used in relatively small amounts across formulations.

Octyldodecyl oleate works by sitting on and between skin cells, forming a protective layer that slows water evaporation. Unlike heavier occlusive agents, its branched structure allows it to spread thinly across the skin surface, providing moisture-binding benefits without a waxy or sticky residue.The oleic acid component also has mild skin-conditioning properties, contributing to overall skin feel and suppleness.
