What Is Oryza Sativa Extract?
Oryza sativa extract is derived from rice, a grain that has been used in skincare traditions for centuries. The extract contains naturally occurring compounds including phenolic compounds, betaine, and squalene, which are thought to contribute to its skincare properties.
In cosmetic formulations, rice extract functions as a skin conditioning agent and can also serve as an absorbent or bulking ingredient depending on the product type. It is used in a relatively small proportion of skincare products (around 1.2%), typically at varying concentrations depending on the intended effect.
Benefits for Your Skin
How It Works
Rice extract contains polyphenols and other compounds that act as antioxidants, neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS) — unstable molecules created by UV exposure and environmental stress that can damage skin cells and accelerate visible ageing. By reducing ROS levels, the extract may help protect the skin's structural proteins.
Research on black rice extract specifically suggests it may help regulate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) — enzymes that break down collagen — whilst simultaneously supporting type I procollagen production, the precursor to new collagen formation. This dual action may help maintain skin firmness over time.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research into rice and rice bran extracts has identified several bioactive compounds with skincare potential, including antiaging, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective properties. Studies on black rice extract in particular have shown promise in cell models, where it demonstrated the ability to reduce UV-induced MMP expression whilst supporting collagen synthesis.
However, most research to date has been conducted in laboratory or cell culture settings. Human clinical trials are limited, so whilst the evidence is encouraging, the magnitude of benefit in real-world skincare use remains unclear. More research in human subjects would help establish optimal concentrations and practical efficacy.

How to Use
Rice extract is typically found in creams, serums, and other formulations where it blends easily into the base. No special usage instructions are required — simply apply as part of your regular skincare routine. It works well alongside other antioxidants and moisturising ingredients, though there is no need to use multiple antioxidant products simultaneously if one meets your needs.
