What Is Oxidized Glutathione?

Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) is the oxidised form of glutathione, a naturally occurring tripeptide found in cells. In skincare, it functions as an emollient and skin conditioning agent. Glutathione exists in two forms: reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG), and both play roles in cellular antioxidant defence and skin health.

When applied topically, oxidized glutathione works to support the skin's natural protective mechanisms. It is distinct from reduced glutathione, which has been more extensively studied in oral supplement form for skin lightening effects.

How It Works

Oxidized glutathione contributes to the skin's antioxidant defence system. It works alongside the body's own antioxidant enzymes to neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS) – unstable molecules produced by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental factors. By reducing oxidative stress, it may help limit some of the damage that leads to visible signs of ageing.

As an emollient, it also helps to soften and condition the skin surface, supporting hydration and barrier function.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on oxidized glutathione specifically in topical skincare is limited. Most clinical evidence relates to reduced glutathione (GSH) in oral supplement form, which has shown modest effects on skin tone and some markers of skin ageing in a small number of controlled trials, though results remain mixed and bioavailability concerns persist.

The oxidized form has been studied in cellular models where it demonstrates antioxidant activity, but human clinical data for topical application is sparse. Its inclusion in skincare formulations relies partly on its theoretical antioxidant benefit and its established role as a skin conditioning agent, rather than robust clinical evidence of efficacy in finished products.

How to Use

Oxidized glutathione is typically found as a supporting ingredient in serums, moisturisers, and treatment products rather than as a primary active. Use as directed by the product instructions. It works well in layered routines and can be combined with other antioxidants and sun protection, which is important since antioxidants work best when UV damage is minimised.

Safety & Precautions

Oxidized glutathione is generally well-tolerated in topical formulations. No significant safety concerns have been documented in skincare use, though patch testing is advisable for those with known sensitivities to peptides or multi-ingredient products.
