What Is Parfum?
Parfum (also listed as fragrance or fragrance compound on ingredient labels) refers to a mixture of aromatic compounds used to provide or mask the scent of a skincare product. These fragrances can be derived from natural essential oils, absolutes, or synthesised in a laboratory to replicate natural scents or create entirely new ones.
In skincare formulations, parfum serves primarily as a masking agent—concealing the smell of other active or base ingredients—and as a fragrance component to improve the sensory experience of using the product. It does not provide direct therapeutic benefit to skin.
How It Works
Fragrance compounds are volatile molecules that evaporate from the skin, triggering olfactory receptors in the nose. They do not penetrate deeply into the skin or alter skin biology. Their presence in a formulation is purely cosmetic and sensory in nature.
Clinical Evidence & References
Fragrance itself has no clinically demonstrated benefit for skin health or appearance. However, the sensory pleasure of a pleasant-smelling product may contribute to user satisfaction and adherence to a skincare routine, which indirectly supports consistent use of actives.
Fragrances are a known irritant trigger in individuals with sensitive skin conditions, particularly eczema and rosacea. Those with fragrance sensitivity may experience increased redness, itching, or barrier disruption following exposure.
How to Use
If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea, consider patch testing products containing fragrance before full application. Look for fragrance-free or unscented formulations if you experience persistent irritation. Fragrance concentration does not indicate product efficacy, so choosing unscented options will not compromise the performance of active ingredients.
