Polyacrylate-13

Polyacrylate-13 is a synthetic polymer—a chain of molecules linked together to form a larger structure. It is derived from acrylic acid and functions as a film-forming agent in skincare formulations. When applied to skin, it creates a thin, continuous layer that sits on the surface.This film-forming property is the ingredient's primary cosmetic function. It does not penetrate the skin or alter skin chemistry, but rather works as a topical barrier between the skin and the environment.

Polyacrylate-13 works through its film-forming mechanism. When water in a formulation evaporates after application, the polymer molecules coalesce and form a continuous, protective membrane across the skin surface. This film can help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)—the evaporation of moisture from the skin—by creating a barrier that slows water escape.The polymer itself remains on the surface and does not absorb into deeper skin layers. This makes it a mechanical rather than chemical solution to moisture retention.

Polyacrylate-13 is usually present as a supporting ingredient rather than the main active component, so follow the usage instructions for the complete product. Allow the product to dry fully so the film can form properly. It may be layered under or over other products depending on the formulation—check the product instructions for optimal application order.

Polyacrylate-13 is generally well-tolerated and recognised as safe for cosmetic use. It is unlikely to cause irritation as it remains on the skin surface and does not penetrate. Those with very sensitive skin or polymer sensitivities should patch-test first.
