What Is Porphyra Tenera Extract?
Porphyra tenera extract is derived from a species of red algae commonly used in Asian cuisine. The extract contains mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), naturally occurring compounds that algae produce to protect themselves from UV radiation.
In skincare, this ingredient functions as a skin conditioner, helping to maintain skin hydration and support the skin's natural protective mechanisms. Its primary role appears to be defending skin against oxidative stress and UV-induced damage.
How It Works
The mycosporine-like amino acids in Porphyra tenera work by absorbing and neutralising UV radiation before it can damage skin cells. This reduces the formation of free radicals and helps prevent the activation of inflammatory pathways that lead to photoaging.
The extract also appears to inhibit the expression of enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases) that break down collagen when skin is exposed to UV stress, thereby helping to maintain skin structure and firmness over time.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research in animal models has shown that MAAs extracted from Porphyra tenera offer protective effects against UV-induced photoaging, including reduced skin damage and preservation of collagen structure. Studies have demonstrated that the extract can suppress inflammatory signalling pathways and reduce the expression of collagen-degrading enzymes when skin is exposed to UV radiation.
However, evidence in human skin is more limited. Most published data comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than clinical trials on human volunteers. Further human studies would help clarify its efficacy at typical concentrations used in skincare products.
How to Use
Porphyra tenera extract is typically included in moisturisers, serums, and sun care products. It works well as part of a broader sun protection and antioxidant skincare routine. For optimal benefit, use it daily as part of your morning or evening routine, ideally in conjunction with a dedicated broad-spectrum sunscreen for UV protection.
