Potassium Palm Kernelate

Potassium palm kernelate is a surfactant derived from palm kernel oil that has been saponified with potassium hydroxide. It belongs to the soap family of cleansing agents and is commonly used in skincare formulations to remove oil, dirt and makeup from the skin's surface.In cosmetic formulations, this ingredient serves a dual purpose: it acts as a cleanser whilst also helping to control the viscosity (thickness) of liquids and gels, making products easier to apply and more stable.

As a surfactant, potassium palm kernelate works by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing it to lift and suspend oily substances that would otherwise bead up on skin. This enables water-based cleansers to effectively remove lipophilic (oil-loving) impurities.The ingredient's molecular structure has both water-loving and oil-loving components, making it an effective bridge between water and oil. This is why it appears in both rinse-off cleansers and leave-on formulations where mild cleansing action is desired.

This ingredient is typically found in cleansing products—face washes, body cleansers and makeup removers—rather than serums or moisturisers. Use as directed on product packaging. If using a cleanser containing this ingredient, follow with your regular toning and moisturising steps. The ingredient does its job during the cleanse phase, so leave-on contact time is not necessary.

Potassium palm kernelate is generally recognised as safe for cosmetic use and is well-tolerated by most skin types. Those with very sensitive skin or soap sensitivities should patch test first, as any cleansing agent can occasionally cause irritation in reactive individuals.
