What Is Progesterone?
Progesterone is a steroid hormone naturally produced in the body, primarily by the ovaries and adrenal glands. In skincare formulations, it is typically derived synthetically or from plant sources and formulated for topical application.
As oestrogen levels decline during menopause, progesterone levels also shift significantly. This hormonal change affects skin structure, hydration and elasticity. Topical progesterone is used in skincare to address these menopausal skin changes, though its exact mechanism in cosmetic formulations remains an area of ongoing research.
How It Works
Progesterone is thought to work by binding to progesterone receptors in skin cells, influencing collagen production and skin hydration. During menopause, declining progesterone levels contribute to reduced skin thickness and elasticity; topical application may help compensate for these hormonal changes.
However, the depth of penetration of topical progesterone and the extent to which it reaches viable skin layers remains incompletely understood. Research on its cosmetic efficacy is still limited compared to other anti-aging ingredients.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research into topical progesterone for skin aging is sparse. A 2019 review identified six studies investigating micronised progesterone for menopausal skin changes; only three reported measurable effects on aging markers, and only one specifically supported the use of topical application alone. Another study reported benefit from systemic hormone therapy containing progesterone, though this involved combined hormone replacement rather than cosmetic-only use.
Progesterone was generally well-tolerated in the studies reviewed, with no significant safety concerns reported. However, evidence remains limited, and larger, robust clinical trials would strengthen our understanding of its efficacy in cosmetic formulations.
How to Use
Progesterone-containing products are typically applied as serums or creams once or twice daily to clean skin. For best results, consistency is important; allow at least 4-8 weeks of regular use before assessing visible changes. Combine with sun protection and other proven anti-aging ingredients such as retinoids or vitamin C for comprehensive support.
