What Is Propane?

Propane is a lightweight hydrocarbon gas derived from natural gas or petroleum refining. In skincare, it serves as a propellant—a pressurised gas that forces product out of aerosol containers when you press the actuator.

Its role is purely functional rather than therapeutic. It allows formulations to be delivered as sprays or foams, which can be useful for even product distribution or application to hard-to-reach areas. Once dispensed, propane disperses into the air and plays no further role in the formula's efficacy on skin.

How It Works

Propane works by creating pressure inside an aerosol canister. When the valve opens, this pressure forces the liquid or semi-solid formula upwards and out through the nozzle, atomising or foaming it as it exits. The gas itself remains inert and does not chemically interact with the skincare ingredients.

Once the product reaches your skin, the propane evaporates rapidly into the air and is no longer present in the formula, leaving only the active ingredients to work as intended.

How to Use

Shake aerosol containers before use to ensure even mixing of the propellant and product. When using spray or foam formats, apply from a distance of approximately 10–15 cm from the skin for even coverage. Store containers upright in a cool place, away from direct heat or sunlight, as excessive temperature can increase pressure and affect dispensing.

Propane is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic products and does not penetrate or accumulate in skin. Inhalation of propellant gases in high concentrations is not recommended, so use sprays in well-ventilated areas and avoid deliberately inhaling vapours.
