What Is Pueraria Lobata Symbiosome Extract?

Pueraria lobata symbiosome extract is derived from the root nodules (symbiosomes) of kudzu, a legume plant. These nodules contain specialised proteins called leghemoglobin, which the plant uses to facilitate nitrogen fixation. When extracted and used in skincare, this ingredient functions as an antioxidant and skin conditioner.

The extract is processed to preserve the active leghemoglobin proteins, which are then incorporated into cosmetic formulations at relatively modest concentrations.

Benefits for Your Skin

How It Works

The mechanism centres on leghemoglobin's ability to transport oxygen within skin cells. This oxygen delivery may support the activity of prolyl-4-hydroxylase, an enzyme essential for collagen synthesis. By optimising oxygen availability to this enzyme, the extract may indirectly enhance the skin's capacity to produce and stabilise collagen fibres.

Additionally, as an antioxidant, the extract can neutralise free radicals that would otherwise degrade skin proteins and accelerate visible ageing.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research in vitro has demonstrated that Pueraria lobata symbiosome extract can stimulate procollagen production in human dermal fibroblasts, the cells responsible for making collagen. This is a promising finding, as increased procollagen synthesis may translate to improved skin firmness and elasticity over time.

However, clinical data in human subjects is limited. The evidence to date is largely laboratory-based, so real-world efficacy in finished products requires further investigation. The ingredient appears well-tolerated in cosmetic applications.

How to Use

This ingredient is typically found in serums, creams and moisturisers designed to support skin firmness and antioxidant protection. Use as directed on product packaging, usually once or twice daily. It works well alongside other collagen-supporting ingredients such as vitamin C or retinol, though introduce multiple actives gradually to monitor tolerance.

Safety & Precautions

Generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. No significant safety concerns have been reported, though those with legume allergies should check product ingredients.
