What Is Punica Granatum Fruit Juice?

Punica granatum fruit juice is expressed from the pomegranate, Punica granatum.

According to its International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) status, Punica granatum fruit juice is primarily used as a skin conditioning ingredient or to add flavor to lip products; however, studies indicate it has much more value than just those applications.

Like extracts of the pomegranate fruit itself, the juice has free radical-fighting properties, primarily from compounds called punicalagans, which are powerful phenolic antioxidants. One study found that pomegranate juice had strong anti-inflammatory properties which helped improve repair mechanisms within photodamaged skin. In addition, evidence shows that pomegranate juice has some antibacterial activity.

The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review board states that usage levels for Punica granatum fruit juice in cosmetics range from 0.0001-0.1%.
