What Is Pyrus Communis Fruit Extract?

Pyrus communis fruit extract comes from the common pear and contains naturally occurring compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids. These phytonutrients give the extract its antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties.

In skincare formulations, this ingredient functions primarily as a skin conditioner and protectant. It appears in relatively few products (around 0.2% of skincare formulations), typically used in moisturisers, serums and treatment gels where it works to support skin health and appearance.

How It Works

Pear fruit extract delivers its benefits through multiple pathways. The phenolic compounds and flavonoids act as antioxidants, neutralising free radicals that can contribute to skin ageing and damage. These same compounds support the skin's natural moisture barrier, helping to lock in hydration.

The extract also appears to influence skin mechanical properties—essentially how the skin stretches and recovers—potentially through conditioning effects that improve skin suppleness and resilience.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on pear fruit extract in skincare is still emerging. A small clinical study (13 participants) found that an emulgel containing Pyrus communis extract showed measurable improvements in skin elasticity and mechanical properties over 90 days, with results differing significantly from placebo formulations.

Another study investigated the extract's traditional use for skin rejuvenation, noting improvements in skin moisture, sebum regulation and other parameters. However, evidence remains limited in scope and scale. More robust, larger-scale studies would help establish its efficacy more firmly. The extract has also been studied for potential cytotoxic activity against skin cancer cell lines in laboratory settings, though this does not translate to proven clinical benefit for treating or preventing skin cancer.

How to Use

This ingredient is typically incorporated into moisturisers, serums and treatment gels at low concentrations. Use as directed on the product label. Since pear fruit extract is often used in hydrating formulations, it tends to work best when applied to damp skin to help seal in moisture. It can be used daily as part of your routine and layers well with other skincare ingredients.

Safety & Precautions

Pyrus communis fruit extract is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. As with any plant-derived ingredient, those with known sensitivities to pear or related botanical families should patch test first.
