Ribes nigrum seed extract is derived from blackcurrant seeds, a byproduct of fruit processing. The extract contains arabinogalactan proteins—complex carbohydrate structures with a high molecular weight that are naturally present in plant cell walls. These polysaccharides are isolated through aqueous extraction methods and function primarily as humectants and emollients in skincare formulations.

As a humectant, the extract has the capacity to draw water into the outer layers of the skin, supporting hydration. Its emollient properties help to maintain skin suppleness and create a smooth skin surface, making it a useful ingredient for formulations designed to improve skin comfort and moisture retention.

The arabinogalactan proteins in blackcurrant seed extract work through two primary mechanisms. First, their humectant nature allows them to bind water molecules and draw them into the stratum corneum, the skin's outermost layer. This action helps to increase skin hydration levels and can improve the appearance of dry or dehydrated skin.

Second, research indicates that these polysaccharides may be internalised by skin cells through endosomal transport, a natural cellular uptake mechanism. Once inside the cells, they appear to influence cell physiology and metabolic activity in fibroblasts and keratinocytes—the primary cell types responsible for skin structure and function. However, the clinical significance of this cellular interaction in real-world skincare remains to be fully established.

Ribes nigrum seed extract is typically used as a supporting ingredient within serums, moisturisers, and hydrating products rather than as a standalone treatment. For optimal hydration benefits, apply to clean, slightly damp skin to allow the extract's humectant properties to lock in moisture.
