What Is Rosa Rugosa Flower Water?

Rosa rugosa flower water is a hydrosol derived from the rugosa rose, a hardy shrub native to East Asia. It is produced through steam distillation or infusion of the flower buds and petals, resulting in a fragrant liquid that contains water-soluble botanical compounds.

In skincare formulations, it primarily functions as a fragrance and masking agent, contributing both scent and sensory appeal to products. The flower water contains phenolic compounds, including molecules called rosarugosides, which have been studied for their potential antioxidant properties.

How It Works

The antioxidant potential of rosa rugosa flower water is attributed to its phenolic compounds, particularly rosarugosides A and D. These molecules appear to work by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS)—unstable molecules that can damage skin cells and contribute to visible ageing and inflammation.

When applied topically, these compounds may help protect skin from oxidative stress, though the extent to which a diluted flower water delivers sufficient concentration of these compounds to the skin in finished products remains unclear.

Clinical Evidence & References

Laboratory studies have identified rosarugosides within rosa rugosa flower buds and demonstrated their ability to reduce ROS production in human dermal fibroblasts under inflammatory conditions in vitro. This suggests potential anti-ageing and protective effects at the cellular level.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most research has been conducted on isolated compounds or cell cultures rather than on the flower water itself in finished skincare products. Further studies would be needed to confirm whether these benefits translate to meaningful improvements in human skin when rosa rugosa flower water is used as formulated.

How to Use

Rosa rugosa flower water is typically found as a secondary ingredient in serums, toners, and moisturisers rather than as a primary active. Use products containing it as directed by the manufacturer. If using multiple products, introduce them one at a time to monitor skin tolerance. Store products in a cool place away from direct sunlight, as the stability of botanical compounds can diminish over time.

Safety & Precautions

Rosa rugosa flower water is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. Those with fragrance sensitivity or known rose allergies should perform a patch test before use.
