What Is Santalol?

Santalol is a sesquiterpene—an organic compound with a simple molecular structure—derived from sandalwood oil. In skincare formulations, it primarily functions as a fragrance ingredient, contributing the characteristic warm, woody scent associated with sandalwood.

Beyond its olfactory role, santalol has been the subject of laboratory research exploring potential protective effects on skin cells, particularly in relation to UV-induced damage and cellular stress.

How It Works

Santalol appears to work by activating cellular defence mechanisms. In laboratory settings, it has demonstrated the capacity to induce apoptosis (controlled cell death) in damaged skin cells and trigger cell cycle arrest, preventing abnormal cellular proliferation.

The ingredient also shows antioxidant properties, which may help neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental stressors. However, most evidence to date comes from cell culture and animal studies rather than human clinical trials.

Clinical Evidence & References

Laboratory research has shown promising results for santalol's protective effects against UV-induced skin damage and oxidative stress in mice and cell cultures. Studies have demonstrated concentration-dependent protective effects and reductions in inflammatory markers in skin tissue models.

It is important to note that the majority of current evidence comes from controlled laboratory environments rather than human studies. Whilst these findings are encouraging, further human clinical trials would be needed to establish efficacy and optimal concentrations for skincare applications.

How to Use

Santalol is typically incorporated into formulations for its fragrance contribution rather than as a targeted active ingredient at specific concentrations. If you are using a product containing santalol, apply as directed on the product label. As with any fragrance ingredient, those with sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivity may wish to conduct a patch test first.

Safety & Precautions

Santalol is derived from a natural source and is generally well-tolerated. However, as a fragrance component, it is a known allergen in the EU and may cause irritation or allergic reactions in individuals with fragrance sensitivity or compromised skin barriers.
