Sea water is a complex aqueous solution containing sodium chloride, magnesium, potassium, calcium and other mineral salts, along with trace elements. In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a humectant—drawing moisture into the skin—and as a solvent to dissolve and deliver other actives.
Sea water appears in roughly 0.7% of skincare products, typically at concentrations ranging from 5% to 83% depending on the formulation type. Its mineral profile varies depending on the water source, with Dead Sea water notably higher in magnesium and other salts compared to standard ocean water.
How It Works
Sea water hydrates the skin through osmotic action—its dissolved salts and minerals create a concentration gradient that encourages water to move into the stratum corneum. This humectant effect is enhanced by the presence of magnesium and other electrolytes, which support cell function and barrier integrity.
The mineral composition also appears to have mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, particularly in Dead Sea water formulations where mineral concentrations are notably higher. These minerals may help stabilise skin cells and reduce inflammatory responses to environmental stressors.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research on Dead Sea water specifically suggests anti-aging and rejuvenating potential, with studies indicating benefits for photoaging, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The mechanisms appear to involve both hydration and the mineral profile's effect on reducing inflammation and supporting cellular repair pathways.
However, most clinical evidence focuses on Dead Sea water rather than standard sea water, and the evidence base for general sea water in cosmetic formulations remains limited. More research would help clarify efficacy at typical cosmetic concentrations, and how benefits compare across different water sources.

How to Use
Sea water formulations work best when layered with other hydrating ingredients—apply to damp skin followed by a humectant serum and occlusive moisturiser to lock in the hydration. If the product contains high salt concentrations (above 10%), use sparingly on sensitive or compromised skin barriers, and always follow with a barrier-supporting cream.
