What Is Sodium Cocoyl Alaninate?
Sodium cocoyl alaninate is a mild surfactant derived from coconut oil and the amino acid alanine. It functions as a cleansing agent in formulations, but unlike harsher surfactants, it also carries conditioning properties that help improve the feel and appearance of skin and hair.
This ingredient is relatively uncommon in skincare products, appearing in roughly 0.2% of formulations. It works by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing oil and dirt to be lifted away, whilst simultaneously depositing conditioning benefits during the cleansing process.
How It Works
Sodium cocoyl alaninate is an anionic surfactant, meaning it carries a negative charge. This charge allows it to surround oil molecules and dirt, trapping them in micelles (tiny spheres) that can be rinsed away with water.
What distinguishes this ingredient is its ability to undergo a process called coacervation. When the formula is diluted during use, it can form complexes with conditioning agents and polycationic polymers already present in the product. These complexes deposit onto the skin or scalp, providing lubrication and conditioning benefits in addition to cleansing.

The ingredient's mild nature and coconut derivation suggest it is well-tolerated, but further human studies would help establish its performance profile compared to other mild surfactants used in cleansing products.

This ingredient is typically found in rinse-off cleansers rather than leave-on products. Use as directed on the product label, usually applying to damp skin, massaging gently, and rinsing thoroughly with water.
