Sodium Fluoride

Sodium fluoride is an inorganic salt compound containing fluorine, most commonly recognised as an active ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash. In skincare, its presence is typically incidental to formulations that may also serve oral care purposes, rather than being a primary skin-targeted ingredient.The compound functions as an antimicrobial and antiplaque agent, though its cosmetic use in skincare products remains limited compared to its established role in dental hygiene.

Sodium fluoride works primarily through antimicrobial mechanisms, inhibiting bacterial growth and metabolism. In oral care applications, it is well-established that fluoride strengthens tooth enamel through remineralisation. However, its specific mechanisms of action on skin tissue differ significantly from its effects on dental enamel, and evidence for direct skin benefits remains limited.

Sodium fluoride-containing skincare products are typically formulations that serve dual purposes, such as lip balms or products designed for the oral region. Use as directed on the product label, and ensure products are not ingested unless specifically formulated as a mouthwash or oral rinse.

Sodium fluoride is generally recognised as safe in topical cosmetic concentrations when used as directed. Avoid ingestion of topical skincare products containing this ingredient; systemic fluoride toxicity is a concern primarily with ingested sources at high doses.
