What Is Sodium Laurate?
Sodium laurate is an anionic surfactant derived from lauric acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid. It functions as a cleansing agent and emulsifier in skincare formulations, helping to remove oils and impurities from the skin's surface whilst stabilising oil and water-based ingredients in products.
As a surfactant, sodium laurate works by reducing surface tension, which allows water and oil to mix more effectively. This property makes it useful in cleansers, body washes, and other formulations where effective cleansing is required.
How It Works
Sodium laurate is an anionic surfactant, meaning it carries a negative charge. This structure allows it to interact with both water and oil-based substances simultaneously. The molecule's oil-loving tail attaches to sebum and makeup on the skin, whilst its water-loving head remains attracted to water, allowing these substances to be rinsed away.
When used in emulsions, sodium laurate positions itself at the boundary between oil and water phases, stabilising the mixture and preventing separation over time.
