What Is Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate?
Sodium myristoyl glutamate is a surfactant derived from glutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid, combined with myristic acid (a fatty acid). It functions as a mild cleanser in skincare formulations, helping to remove excess oil, makeup and surface impurities.
Unlike harsher synthetic surfactants, this ingredient is designed to cleanse while maintaining the skin's natural barrier. It appears in a relatively small proportion of skincare products, typically in cleansers and micellar waters where its gentle action is valued.
How It Works
As a surfactant, sodium myristoyl glutamate works by reducing the surface tension between oil and water, allowing oil-soluble impurities to be suspended and rinsed away. Its amino acid origin suggests it may interact more gently with skin proteins compared to conventional surfactants.
The ingredient's structure — combining a hydrophilic (water-loving) head with a lipophilic (oil-loving) tail — enables it to sit at the boundary between oil and water, facilitating the removal of sebum and makeup whilst minimising disruption to the skin's protective layer.
Clinical Evidence & References
Direct clinical studies specific to sodium myristoyl glutamate are limited in the published literature. However, amino acid-derived surfactants as a class have been investigated for their milder cleansing profiles compared to conventional anionic surfactants.
Given its use in rinse-off formulations and relatively low typical concentrations, it is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. Further dedicated research would help establish specific efficacy claims and optimal use conditions.
How to Use
This ingredient typically appears in cleansing products rather than leave-on treatments. Use as directed on the product label — usually as part of a water-based cleanser that is rinsed away. It can be incorporated into both morning and evening routines depending on the formulation and your skin's needs.
