What Is Sodium Palmate?

Sodium palmate is the sodium salt of palmitic acid, a fatty acid derived from palm oil. In skincare, it functions as a surfactant and cleansing agent—meaning it helps lift oils, dirt, and makeup from the skin's surface so they can be rinsed away with water.

Because it bridges water and oil, sodium palmate is particularly useful in cleansing products, where it also helps control texture and viscosity. It is found in a small proportion of skincare products, most commonly in face washes and cleansers.

How It Works

Sodium palmate is a surfactant, which means one end of its molecule is attracted to water and the other to oil. When you apply a cleanser containing sodium palmate and add water, the molecules arrange themselves to trap oil and dirt between them, allowing these impurities to lift away from the skin and rinse down the drain.

In formulations, it also helps thicken the product and stabilise the mixture, contributing to a pleasant texture that spreads easily across the face.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research specific to sodium palmate in skincare is limited. However, as a well-established and widely used surfactant, it has a longstanding safety profile in cosmetics and personal care. Its cleansing efficacy is well-understood from a chemistry perspective.

Because it is relatively mild compared to some synthetic surfactants, it is often chosen for formulations intended for sensitive or daily-use cleansing. If you have particular skin concerns, a patch test before regular use is sensible practice.

How to Use

Use sodium palmate-containing cleansers as you would any gentle face wash: apply to damp skin, massage lightly for 30–60 seconds, and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. It works best as part of a cleansing routine, ideally morning and evening. Because surfactants can be drying if overused, follow with an appropriate moisturiser for your skin type.

Safety & Precautions

Sodium palmate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for cosmetic use. As with any cleanser, if you experience persistent irritation or dryness, discontinue use and consider a different formulation.
