What Is Sodium Shea Butterate?
Sodium shea butterate is the salt form of shea butter fatty acids. It's created through a saponification process, where shea butter — extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree — is combined with sodium hydroxide. The result is a mild surfactant that can dissolve oils and remove dirt from the skin.
Unlike harsher synthetic surfactants, sodium shea butterate retains some of shea butter's emollient properties, making it gentler than conventional cleansing agents whilst still performing the core function of a cleanser.
How It Works
Surfactants work by having one end attracted to oil and the other to water. This allows them to surround oil-based impurities on the skin, lift them away, and rinse them off with water. Sodium shea butterate functions in this way, but its plant-derived structure means it typically has lower irritancy potential than conventional detergents.
Because it retains some of shea butter's natural conditioning compounds, it tends to leave skin feeling less stripped after cleansing, which may be particularly helpful if your skin is prone to dryness or sensitivity.
Clinical Evidence & References
Shea butter itself has a long history of traditional use and reasonable evidence supporting its emollient and skin-conditioning properties. However, specific clinical research on sodium shea butterate as a surfactant is limited. Most evidence comes from ingredient supplier data and cosmetic chemistry literature rather than peer-reviewed studies in humans.
What is known suggests it performs as a mild cleanser with lower irritancy than many conventional surfactants, but robust comparative efficacy studies would help clarify its precise benefits for different skin concerns.
How to Use
Sodium shea butterate is typically found in cleansing products such as facial washes, body washes, and sometimes shampoos. As with any cleanser, use it as directed on the product label — usually twice daily or as tolerated. If using a cleanser containing this ingredient, follow with appropriate moisturiser or treatment products suited to your skin type.
