What Is Sorbitan Fatty Acid Ester?
Sorbitan fatty acid esters are non-ionic surfactants made by combining sorbitol (a naturally occurring sugar alcohol) with various fatty acids. They exist in several forms depending on the type and number of fatty acids attached—such as sorbitan monostearate, sorbitan tristearate, and sorbitan oleate. In skincare, they function primarily as emulsifiers, helping to bind ingredients that would otherwise separate.
These ingredients are widely used in cosmetic formulations because they're gentle, stable across a range of pH levels, and effective at relatively low concentrations. Their role is largely behind-the-scenes: they keep products from separating and help active ingredients distribute evenly throughout a formula.
How It Works
Sorbitan fatty acid esters work through their molecular structure, which has both water-loving and oil-loving regions. This dual nature allows them to sit at the boundary between oil and water, preventing the two from separating. In technical terms, they reduce the surface tension between immiscible ingredients, which is why they're classified as surfactants.
Because they're non-ionic (uncharged), they tend to be gentler on skin than some other surfactant types. They don't strip the skin or disrupt the barrier when used in formulations at standard concentrations.
