Sorbitan Palmate

Sorbitan palmate is a natural emulsifier derived from sorbitol (a sugar alcohol) and palmitic acid. It belongs to the polysorbate family and is widely used in skincare formulations to blend water and oil-based ingredients that would otherwise separate.In a moisturiser or serum, it acts as a bridge between aqueous and lipid phases, creating a stable, uniform texture. It also functions as an emollient, helping to soften and condition the skin's surface.

Sorbitan palmate has a molecular structure with both water-loving and oil-loving regions, making it amphiphilic. This dual nature allows it to sit at the interface between oil droplets and the aqueous phase, preventing them from coalescing and separating over time.On skin, it deposits a thin hydrophobic film that reduces transepidermal water loss and creates a smoother, more uniform surface texture. This effect is subtle and non-occlusive, making it suitable for lighter formulations.
