What Is Soymilk?
Soymilk is derived from soy beans and contains natural compounds including isoflavones and proteins. In skincare, it functions as a skin conditioning agent, helping to soften and hydrate the skin surface.
The ingredient's potential benefits largely stem from isoflavones, phytoestrogen compounds found naturally in soy. These are thought to contribute antioxidant and protective properties, though most research to date has focused on oral intake rather than topical application.
How It Works
Soymilk contains isoflavones, which are bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. These compounds can help neutralise free radicals that contribute to skin damage and premature ageing. Additionally, the proteins and emollient properties of soymilk help condition the skin by improving moisture retention at the surface.
When applied topically or consumed orally, isoflavones may support the skin's natural defence mechanisms against environmental stressors such as UV radiation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests potential benefits, though most evidence comes from oral intake studies rather than topical application. Studies in mice have shown that fermented soymilk containing readily absorbable isoflavone forms reduced UV-induced skin damage, including erythema and DNA damage markers, compared to standard soymilk.
One human study found that oral intake of soymilk okara powder for 8 weeks improved skin elasticity in women with self-reported constipation. However, direct evidence of topical soymilk's efficacy in skincare formulations remains limited, and more research on topical application is needed to establish its effectiveness in cosmetic products.

How to Use
Soymilk appears in skincare products as part of formulations designed to condition and hydrate the skin. Use products containing this ingredient as directed, typically as part of a daily skincare routine. Its conditioning properties work best when the skin is already hydrated, so consider applying it to damp skin or layering with a hydrating toner for optimal results.
