What Is Staphylococcus Epidermidis?

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a naturally occurring bacterium that colonises healthy human skin as part of the normal skin microbiota. Rather than being a contaminant, it is one of the most abundant bacterial species on the skin surface and plays an active role in maintaining skin health.

In skincare formulations, S. epidermidis is included to support the skin's natural microbial ecosystem and strengthen barrier function through its metabolic activity.

How It Works

S. epidermidis secretes enzymes including sphingomyelinase, which breaks down skin lipids to obtain nutrients for bacterial survival. In doing so, it simultaneously facilitates the host's own production of ceramides — crucial barrier lipids that prevent transepidermal water loss and maintain skin integrity.

The bacterium also primes cutaneous immune responses and establishes colonisation resistance, meaning it occupies space on the skin surface that would otherwise be available to potentially pathogenic organisms.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research demonstrates that S. epidermidis increases skin ceramide levels in model systems and significantly reduces water loss, suggesting a direct contribution to barrier function. The bacterium is recognised as an active participant in skin homeostasis rather than a passive resident.

However, S. epidermidis exists on a spectrum of strain-level diversity, and the evidence indicates that benefits depend on which specific strains are present. Not all strains behave identically; emerging research suggests some may be more beneficial than others in specific contexts. Further human clinical studies are needed to establish optimal strains and efficacy in topical formulations.

How to Use

Products containing S. epidermidis are typically used as part of a regular skincare routine. Allow the product to absorb fully, and use consistently to support the skin microbiome. If introducing a new microbiota-focused product, patch test first, particularly if you have sensitive or compromised skin.

Safety & Precautions

S. epidermidis is a commensal organism naturally present on healthy skin and is generally considered safe in topical formulations. However, those with severely compromised skin barriers or immunocompromised individuals should consult a healthcare provider before use.
