Talc is a naturally occurring mineral composed of magnesium silicate. In skincare, it is processed into a fine powder and used primarily for its absorbent and texturising properties. Cosmetic-grade talc is refined to remove impurities and does not contain asbestos, which is a separate fibrous mineral sometimes found in unrefined talc deposits.
In formulations, talc functions as an absorbent (drawing moisture away from the skin surface), an anticaking agent (preventing clumping in powders), and a bulking agent (adding texture and coverage). It is found in approximately 3.5% of skincare products, most commonly in powder formulations.
