What Is Tbhq?
Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in cosmetic and food preservation. In skincare products, it serves primarily as a preservative that protects oils and other ingredients from oxidising when exposed to air and light, which would otherwise cause rancidity and reduce product efficacy.
TBHQ works by donating electrons to unstable molecules called free radicals, stabilising them before they can damage product integrity. It is found in a small proportion of skincare formulations, typically at low concentrations.
Benefits for Your Skin
How It Works
TBHQ functions by intercepting free radicals—unstable molecules that form when products are exposed to oxygen and light. By donating electrons to these free radicals, TBHQ neutralises them and prevents them from triggering oxidative chain reactions that would degrade the product's oils and active ingredients.
Research suggests TBHQ may also activate cellular antioxidant pathways in skin tissue, particularly the Nrf2 signalling pathway, which regulates the body's natural defence against oxidative stress. However, this effect is studied primarily in medical contexts rather than in routine skincare use.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory studies indicate that TBHQ is an effective antioxidant capable of protecting oils from oxidative degradation and may support cellular antioxidant defences through the Nrf2 pathway. Research in wound healing models has suggested potential benefits for tissue survival under oxidative stress, though these studies were conducted in controlled, medical settings rather than cosmetic applications.
Evidence specific to topical skincare benefits in humans is limited. While TBHQ is established as a safe preservative in cosmetic use at typical concentrations, its direct benefit to skin beyond maintaining product quality remains understudied.

How to Use
TBHQ is used by formulators rather than applied directly by consumers. If you are using a product containing TBHQ, simply follow the product's standard instructions. Its presence indicates the formulation is designed to remain stable throughout its shelf life and after opening.
