What Is Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract?

Extract derived from the leaf or flower of the thyme plant. It can have potent antioxidant properties.

Its fragrant component can also cause skin sensitivity, but thyme extract’s beneficial components can benefit skin. Generally speaking, thyme extract should not be one of the chief antioxidants in skincare products; however, in lower amounts and mixed with other antioxidants, it’s OK.

How It Works

Thymus vulgaris extract contains thymol and other volatile compounds that interact with skin in multiple ways. The antioxidant compounds may help neutralise free radicals, whilst the herb's mild astringent nature is thought to gently tone and support skin firmness.

As a skin conditioner, the extract helps improve the feel and texture of a formulation, supporting the skin's natural lipid barrier and hydration levels. The aromatic components also contribute to the sensory experience of the product.

How to Use

Thymus vulgaris extract is typically found in toners, essences, and light serums at low concentrations. Since it is primarily a conditioning and fragrance agent, it works well layered with other active ingredients. Patch test first if you have sensitive skin, as the herbal fragrance may irritate in rare cases.

Safety & Precautions

Generally well-tolerated by most skin types. May cause sensitivity in individuals with fragrance allergies or very reactive skin. Avoid if you have known allergy to members of the Lamiaceae (mint) family.
