What Is Toluene-2,5-Diamine?
Toluene-2,5-diamine (TDA) is an organic chemical compound used as a precursor in oxidative hair dye systems. It functions as a colour coupler, meaning it reacts with other dye intermediates in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to produce stable colour molecules that penetrate the hair shaft.
This ingredient is not typically found in skincare products designed for facial or body care. It appears almost exclusively in permanent and semi-permanent hair colouring formulations, where it serves a technical function rather than a skincare benefit.
How It Works
TDA works through an oxidative coupling reaction. When mixed with hydrogen peroxide during hair dyeing, it oxidises and reacts with colour couplers to form larger, colour-bearing molecules. These molecules are too large to escape the hair cortex, so they remain trapped within the hair structure, creating permanent or semi-permanent colour.
This mechanism is specific to hair dyeing and has no established role in skincare applications.

Research on TDA has focused primarily on safety and sensitisation potential rather than efficacy as a skincare ingredient. Studies show that TDA can trigger concentration-dependent immune responses and contact sensitisation in patch testing, with some individuals developing allergic responses to hair dyes containing this compound.
Genotoxicity studies have shown mixed results: TDA tested positive in bacterial mutation assays and for chromosomal aberrations in laboratory settings, though the relevance of these findings to topical use in hair dye formulations at typical concentrations remains subject to regulatory assessment. There is no evidence supporting its use in skincare.
