What Is Tridecane?
Tridecane is a hydrocarbon—a chain of 13 carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms attached. It occurs naturally in small amounts in crude oil and is synthesised for use in cosmetics. In skincare, it functions as a solvent and carrier ingredient, helping to dissolve and distribute fragrance and other oil-soluble components throughout a product.
Found in approximately 0.8% of skincare products, tridecane is typically included in formulations where fragrance delivery and product stability are priorities. It is classified as a volatile organic compound, meaning it evaporates relatively easily once applied to skin.
How It Works
Tridecane works as a solvent by dissolving fragrance molecules and other lipophilic (oil-loving) ingredients that cannot dissolve in water. This allows them to be evenly dispersed throughout a product rather than separating or settling. Once applied to skin, the volatile nature of tridecane means it evaporates relatively quickly, which may help fragrance notes to develop and project.

Tridecane has been studied primarily in occupational exposure contexts (such as jet fuel exposure) rather than in cosmetic formulations at typical use concentrations. Research on neat tridecane and related hydrocarbons has identified potential for skin irritation at high concentrations in animal models, particularly when exposure is prolonged or repeated. However, the concentrations used in these studies are substantially higher than those found in consumer skincare products.
