What Is Tripotassium EDTA?
Tripotassium EDTA is the potassium salt form of EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid), a chelating agent used in cosmetic formulations. Chelating agents work by binding to metal ions and minerals that may be present in water or other ingredients, preventing them from interfering with product stability and performance.
In skincare products, tripotassium EDTA functions primarily as a preservative aid and stabiliser rather than as an active skincare ingredient. It helps maintain product integrity and extends shelf life by neutralising trace metals that could otherwise compromise formulation efficacy.
How It Works
Tripotassium EDTA functions as a chelating agent by chemically binding to metal ions (such as iron, copper, and calcium) that may be present in water used in formulations or introduced through other ingredients. Once bound, these metals are rendered inactive and cannot catalyse unwanted chemical reactions that would degrade the product.
This prevents oxidation and other degradation pathways that can reduce the efficacy of active ingredients and alter product appearance or texture over time. The ingredient essentially 'locks up' problematic metals, keeping them from interfering with the formula.
