What Is Undecanoic Acid?

Undecanoic acid is an 11-carbon saturated fatty acid found naturally in various plant and animal sources. In skincare, it functions as a penetration enhancer, emulsifier, and mild surfactant, helping other ingredients move through the skin barrier more effectively.

It also has mild antiseborrhoeic properties, meaning it may help regulate excess oil production. This makes it a multifunctional ingredient often used in formulations designed to improve ingredient efficacy whilst maintaining skin barrier health.

How It Works

Undecanoic acid works primarily by temporarily altering the structure of the outermost skin layer (stratum corneum), creating pathways for other ingredients to penetrate more effectively. This mechanism is known as penetration enhancement or permeation enhancement.

In formulations, it also stabilises oil and water phases, preventing separation, and may help regulate sebaceous gland activity through mild antiseborrhoeic action, though the exact mechanism in cosmetic use remains incompletely understood.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research indicates undecanoic acid is an effective penetration enhancer in transdermal applications. Studies on melatonin delivery found it enhanced skin permeation 8.6 times compared with control, suggesting strong penetration-enhancing potential.

However, most clinical data comes from pharmaceutical delivery research rather than cosmetic skincare studies. Evidence for its direct benefits to skin health—beyond its role as a penetration aid—remains limited, and further research in cosmetic formulations would help clarify its broader skincare applications.

How to Use

Undecanoic acid is typically a supporting ingredient rather than a standalone treatment. It works best as part of a complete skincare routine where it enhances the effectiveness of other actives. Since it increases penetration, layer it beneath treatments you want to work more effectively, and introduce it gradually if you have sensitive skin to monitor tolerance.

Safety & Precautions

Undecanoic acid is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic concentrations. As with any penetration enhancer, it may increase skin sensitivity initially; patch test first, particularly if you have reactive or compromised skin barrier.
