What Is Zea Mays (Corn) Oil?

Oil pressed from maize germ. It is high in linoleic acid, with oleic acid and naturally occurring vitamin E and plant sterols. It is a straightforward conditioning oil, lighter in feel than oleic-heavy oils such as olive.

How It Works

Corn oil conditions the surface by supplying lipids that sit between skin cells, smoothing the surface and slowing water loss. The linoleic acid is the part worth noting. It is esterified into the acylceramides of the skin's own barrier, and oils supplying it are often suggested to suit oily or congestion-prone skin better than oleic-heavy oils — though that is not firmly settled, and older comedogenicity screens rate corn oil moderately. CosIng also lists an emulsifying function, which reflects its use in helping oil and water phases combine.

How to Use

Zea mays oil is typically used as part of a broader formulation rather than as a standalone treatment. When incorporated into moisturisers, serums, or haircare products, it works best applied to damp skin to help seal in hydration. If using products containing this oil, apply to areas that feel dry or tight, and adjust frequency based on your skin's response.

Safety & Precautions

Zea mays oil is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. However, those prone to fungal acne (malassezia) should note that certain plant oils may potentially feed fungal growth; patch testing is recommended if you have a history of fungal acne or are unsure.
