What Is Acetic Acid?
Acetic acid is the compound that gives vinegar its sharp smell and taste. Household vinegar is a dilute solution of it in water, typically around 5%, and apple cider vinegar is the same acid arriving with some additional plant compounds along for the ride.
In cosmetics it appears as Acetic Acid, and its role is almost always functional rather than active. Formulas need to sit within a specific pH range, both for stability and because many ingredients only work properly within a narrow band, and acetic acid is one of several acids used to bring a formula down to where it needs to be. Used this way it is present in very small amounts and contributes nothing you would notice.
It is a weak acid, meaning it does not fully dissociate in water, which is why vinegar can be handled safely while stronger acids at the same concentration cannot. It does have genuine antimicrobial properties, which is the basis of its long history as a preservative in food and its occasional use in skin and ear preparations in a medical setting.
Where it becomes a problem is in home remedies. Undiluted or barely diluted vinegar applied to the face is a recurring internet suggestion and a reliably poor idea. At meaningful concentrations acetic acid can cause chemical burns and lasting damage, and its pH is far outside anything the skin is designed to handle. There is no cosmetic benefit that justifies it.
How It Works
In a formulation, acetic acid works simply by donating hydrogen ions and lowering pH. Getting that number right matters more than it sounds. Exfoliating acids need a low pH to be active, preservative systems work within defined ranges, and many ingredients degrade or separate if the formula drifts outside its intended window. A pH adjuster is a background component that makes the rest of the formula behave.
Its antimicrobial action comes from the same acidity. A sufficiently acidic environment makes life difficult for many bacteria and fungi, which is why acetic acid has been used to preserve food for centuries and why dilute preparations have a place in some clinical settings. In cosmetics this is a secondary contribution rather than the reason it is included, since modern preservative systems do that job more reliably.
Applied at high concentrations it stops being useful and starts being corrosive. Strong acids of any kind damage skin proteins directly, and acetic acid is no exception. This is the essential thing to understand about it: it is entirely unremarkable at the levels used in a formulated product, and genuinely hazardous at the levels found in a kitchen cupboard.

However, most skincare formulations contain acetic acid at very low concentrations primarily for buffering and preservation purposes, not for direct therapeutic effect.
The evidence base for acetic acid as an active skincare treatment ingredient is limited. Any benefits are largely attributed to its pH-adjusting and antimicrobial functions rather than transformative skincare activity. Misuse or excessive exposure to concentrated acetic acid can irritate skin, so appropriate formulation and concentration are important.
How to Use
Acetic acid is not something you use as a step. It is something you may notice on a label.
- Seeing it on an ingredients list is not a concern. At cosmetic levels it is adjusting pH and nothing more.
- Do not apply vinegar to your face. Neat or lightly diluted vinegar, including apple cider vinegar, can cause burns and lasting marks. This applies to toners, rinses and spot treatments alike.
- If you want an exfoliating acid, use a formulated one. Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid products are made to sit at a controlled strength and pH, which is exactly what a kitchen ingredient is not.
- Take care with any DIY recipe that calls for it. Concentration and pH cannot be judged by eye.
- If you have used it and your skin is sore or marked, stop, keep the area simple and moisturised, and speak to a professional if it does not settle.
