What Is Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil?

Argan oil, pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. It is roughly 80% unsaturated fatty acids — mainly oleic and linoleic — with naturally occurring vitamin E and plant sterols. It sits in the middle of the weight range for plant oils: richer than squalane, lighter than shea. That makes it a reasonable choice for dry and normal skin, though anyone very oily or prone to congestion may find it too much on the face and prefer it on hair, hands or body.

How It Works

Argan oil conditions skin the way most plant oils do — by adding lipids to the surface layer, which softens it and reduces how quickly water evaporates. Its linoleic acid content is the part worth knowing about. Linoleic acid is a component of the skin's own barrier lipids, so oils that supply it tend to be better tolerated by skin whose barrier is already compromised. The vitamin E present is largely there to keep the oil itself from going rancid, though it contributes some antioxidant activity on skin.
