What Is Asparagopsis Armata Extract?

An extract of a red seaweed found in temperate coastal waters, sold under the trade name Ysaline by the French supplier Codif. Like most marine extracts it contains a mix of polysaccharides, minerals and amino acids. CosIng classifies it as skin protecting. In formulas it tends to appear in soothing and blemish-focused products, usually alongside other marine or botanical ingredients.

How It Works

Red-algal extracts of this type are rich in polysaccharides, which hold water and can leave a light film at the surface. That film is a physical buffer and slows moisture loss, which is what the protecting classification describes. This species is also notable for producing halogenated compounds with antibacterial activity in laboratory work, which is the basis of most supplier positioning. The composition of commercial extracts is rarely disclosed and potency varies enormously with how they are prepared, so it is best read as a supporting ingredient rather than the reason to choose a product.
