What Is Beer Extract?
Beer extract is derived from the by-products of beer brewing, primarily from barley, hops, yeast and water. The extract concentrates bioactive compounds naturally present in these ingredients, particularly polyphenols from hops such as kaempferol, quercetin, ferulic acid and xanthohumol derivatives.
In skincare, beer extract functions as a skin and hair conditioning agent. These polyphenolic compounds have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in research settings, which forms the basis for its use in topical formulations.
How It Works
Beer extract works primarily through its polyphenol content. These compounds are free radical scavengers, meaning they can neutralise oxidative stress that damages skin cells and accelerates visible signs of ageing. The anti-inflammatory properties are thought to work by modulating skin's inflammatory response pathways.
As a conditioning agent, the extract also helps to bind moisture to the skin and improve the feel and appearance of the skin barrier, though the specific mechanisms in topical application are not extensively documented.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research indicates that the polyphenolic compounds in beer extract—particularly from hops—possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties when studied in controlled laboratory settings. These findings suggest potential benefits for skin health, though most evidence comes from in vitro or animal studies rather than human clinical trials.
Human studies evaluating beer extract specifically in cosmetic products remain limited. Whilst the individual compounds show promise, translating laboratory findings to real-world skincare efficacy requires further clinical investigation. The ingredient appears well-tolerated in topical formulations, but more evidence would help establish its actual impact on skin appearance and condition.

How to Use
Beer extract is typically incorporated into serums, moisturisers, toners and hair care products. Use as directed on the product label. It works well alongside other antioxidants and can be layered with vitamin C, niacinamide or peptide-based products. There is no specific need to cycle this ingredient.
