What Is Bifida Polysaccharide?
Bifida Polysaccharide is a component derived from Bifidobacterium, a naturally occurring probiotic bacterium. It is obtained through fermentation and extraction processes, creating a concentrated form that can be incorporated into skincare formulations.
In topical applications, this ingredient functions as a humectant, helping to draw and retain moisture in the skin. Beyond hydration, research suggests it may support the skin's natural defence mechanisms and barrier integrity.
How It Works
Bifida Polysaccharide appears to work through multiple pathways. As a humectant, it draws water into the outer layers of the skin, helping to maintain hydration. The ingredient may also interact with skin cells to upregulate key genes responsible for barrier proteins such as filaggrin and aquaporin-3, which are essential for maintaining skin integrity and moisture retention.
Research also suggests it can stimulate the production of antimicrobial peptides, part of the skin's inherent defence system against environmental stressors and irritants.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro studies have demonstrated that Bifida Ferment Lysate (a closely related form) can upregulate genes associated with skin barrier function and antimicrobial defence in cultured skin cells. These include improvements in physical barrier genes and enhanced production of antimicrobial peptides.
Evidence also points to potential benefits for irritated skin conditions, though human clinical trials remain limited. The research base is still developing, and more in vivo studies in human subjects would help clarify the extent of its benefits in real-world skincare use.

How to Use
Bifida Polysaccharide is typically found in serums, essences, and hydrating formulations. It works well as part of a layered routine and pairs effectively with other humectants and barrier-supporting ingredients. Apply to clean, damp skin for optimal hydration uptake.
