Brassica campestris (rapeseed) oil is the non-fragrant oil extracted from the seeds of a plant that is a member of the cabbage family.
In cosmetics, rapeseed oil is used both as an emollient and anti-ageing ingredient. It’s a good source of replenishing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants and is rich in fatty acids, including omega-3 and omega-6.
The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review has determined that Brassica campestris seed oil is safe as used in cosmetics, even in amounts as high as 5%.
A bit of trivia: the oil from cultivars of Brassica campestris that are bred to have lower levels of erucic acid (which is mildly toxic) is known as canola oil and is used as a “neutral” (flavorless) vegetable oil for human and animal foods.
Benefits for Your Skin
How It Works
Brassica campestris seed oil works primarily through emollient action, meaning it fills gaps between skin cells and creates a protective layer that reduces water loss. The fatty acids in the oil are similar in structure to those naturally present in healthy skin.
The vitamin E content also provides antioxidant protection, which may help protect skin from environmental stressors, though the concentration in skincare products is typically modest.

How to Use
Brassica campestris seed oil is typically encountered as part of a broader formulation rather than as a standalone product, so follow the usage instructions of your specific skincare product. It can be used morning or evening, depending on the formulation and your skin type preference.
