Butyloctyl Palmitate

Butyloctyl palmitate is a synthetic ester derived from palmitic acid. It's designed to mimic the skin's natural oils whilst remaining lighter in texture than many traditional emollients.In skincare formulations, it functions as an emollient—a humectant-adjacent ingredient that sits on the skin's surface to soften and smooth. Unlike heavier occlusive oils, it absorbs relatively quickly and tends to leave a polished rather than greasy finish.

Butyloctyl palmitate works by forming a thin, continuous film on the skin's surface. This reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL)—the natural evaporation of moisture from deeper skin layers—whilst allowing the skin to remain breathable.Because it's an ester rather than a long-chain oil, it has a lower molecular weight and doesn't sit as heavily on the skin. This makes it popular in formulations where emollient effect is desired but a matte or semi-matte finish is preferred.

Butyloctyl palmitate is typically included in leave-on formulations such as moisturisers, serums, and sunscreens—you won't usually adjust the concentration yourself. When using products containing this ingredient, apply to clean skin and allow a few moments for absorption before layering additional products. Its lightweight nature means it works well in both morning and evening routines.

Butyloctyl palmitate is generally well-tolerated and is approved for use in cosmetics across major regulatory bodies. It is not known to be a common sensitiser or irritant, though patch testing is always advisable for individuals with very reactive skin.
