Butyrospermum Parkii Nut Extract

Butyrospermum Parkii Nut Extract is derived from the shea nut, native to West Africa. It is a botanical ingredient that functions primarily as an emollient — a substance that softens and smooths the skin by helping to seal in moisture.This extract contains natural fatty acids and other lipid-like compounds that mimic some of the skin's own protective substances. When applied topically, it works to reduce water loss from the skin's surface, helping maintain hydration levels.

The extract works by depositing a thin occlusive layer on the skin's surface. This layer reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — the natural evaporation of moisture from deeper skin layers — allowing hydration to accumulate in the outermost cells.The fatty acid composition also helps reinforce the skin's lipid matrix, the spaces between skin cells that function like a mortar in a brick wall. A stronger lipid matrix can improve the skin's overall resilience and reduce sensitivity.

This ingredient is typically found at very low concentrations in finished products (around 0.1% across skincare ranges). It works best as part of a formulation rather than in isolation, often paired with humectants and other conditioning agents to optimise moisturisation. Apply to damp skin for better water retention, or use as part of your regular moisturiser routine.

Generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations when formulated to be non-sensitising. As with all botanical ingredients, those with known sensitivities to shea or related plant compounds should patch test first.
