C10-18 Triglycerides are a class of natural emollients derived from plant oils, composed of fatty acids with chain lengths between 10 and 18 carbons. They're obtained through the glycerolysis of vegetable oils, creating a lightweight, non-greasy conditioning agent that mimics the skin's natural lipid profile.
In skincare, this ingredient functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent and emollient. It sits on the skin surface to soften and smooth, whilst also acting as a solvent for other actives. Because it has a low molecular weight compared to heavier plant oils, it tends to absorb more readily without leaving a heavy residue.
How It Works
C10-18 Triglycerides work by forming a thin occlusive layer on the skin's surface. This layer reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and helps to lock in moisture, whilst the triglyceride structure is similar enough to skin lipids that it integrates reasonably well without causing congestion in most cases.
The ingredient also acts as a solubiliser, allowing other hydrophobic (oil-loving) compounds to dissolve within formulations so they can be applied more evenly to the skin.
Clinical Evidence & References
Published clinical research specifically on C10-18 Triglycerides in isolation is limited. However, triglycerides as a class have a long history of safe use in cosmetics and are recognised as effective emollients and skin conditioners by regulatory bodies and the broader skincare industry.
Anecdotal reports suggest the ingredient is generally well-tolerated across most skin types, though some individuals with fungal acne (Malassezia-related breakouts) have reported sensitivity to certain plant-derived triglyceride products. This remains an area where individual response varies considerably and further targeted research would be beneficial.
How to Use
C10-18 Triglycerides are most commonly found in serums, oils, and emulsions at modest concentrations. Apply to damp skin to help seal in hydration, or layer beneath a heavier moisturiser. A little goes a long way due to the light, spreadable nature of the ingredient. If you have fungal acne concerns, patch test first, as some individuals find plant-derived triglycerides can trigger breakouts.
