Caprylic/Capric Glycerides

Caprylic/capric glycerides are a mixture of fatty acids derived from coconut oil, bonded to glycerin. They belong to a class of ingredients called triglycerides, which are common in both food and skincare products. In cosmetic formulations, they serve multiple purposes: they condition the skin, help oils and water mix together, and contribute to the overall texture and stability of a product.This ingredient is found in a relatively small proportion of skincare products (around 0.3%), but it is particularly useful in lightweight formulations where a non-greasy feel is desired.

Caprylic/capric glycerides work by forming a thin, conditioning film on the skin. Unlike heavier occlusive oils, they have a relatively low molecular weight, which allows them to spread easily and absorb into the skin without leaving a heavy coating. This makes them useful in emulsions, where they help bind water and oil phases together.The ingredient also has some evidence of enhancing the skin penetration of other active ingredients, though the extent of this effect depends on what other ingredients are present in the formula.

This ingredient is typically used by formulators rather than something you would apply directly. When you use a product containing caprylic/capric glycerides, no special application technique is needed—treat it as you would any other moisturiser or serum. It works well in lightweight moisturisers, serums, and emulsions designed for oily or combination skin.

Generally well-tolerated and safe for cosmetic use. Allergic contact dermatitis is rare but has been documented in sensitive individuals, so discontinue use if irritation occurs.
